QoS Support for Video Conferencing in the COSMOS System

چکیده
Integrating dedicated applications with a wireless LAN and WAN infrastructure, the COSMOS system provides "Construction Site Mobile Operations Support". In this paper, we focus on the approach taken in COSMOS for bandwidth management across the bottleneck satellite WAN link, particularly for supporting video conferencing between company headquarters and construction sites. We discuss the IETF QoS Policy Framework and its application to COSMOS and give an implementation overview.

Distributed QoS Management for A Multiparty Video Conferencing System
The QoS management for distributed interactive multimedia applications is currently mostly based on centralized approaches in which a single group server manages the QoS requirements for all participants. Group servers are simplier to handle, but they may become a weak point of the system due to server failures or performance bottlenecks. In order to avoid these problems and to better support t...
متن کاملA Networked Frame Buffer with Window Management Support
When processing multimedia data streams in a distributed system it is often advantageous if data, in particular, continuous data such as video and audio data, can be sent directly from the source to the sink device. An example is a video conferencing application with source devices (cameras, microphones) transmitting directly to sink devices (frame buffers, speakers) without involving an interm...
متن کاملCell Scheduling and Bandwidth Allocation for Heterogeneous Vbr Video Conferencing Traffic
We first propose a new cell loss scheduling scheme, referred to as the QoS-scheme. This scheme can satisfy different individual quality of service (QoS) requirements of a group of virtual channel connections with minimum required bandwidth. We next derive a simple formula based on Gaussian approximation to allocate bandwidth to heterogeneous VBR video conferencing connections. Comparing the pro...
متن کاملError-Exploiting Video Encoder to Extend Energy/QoS Tradeoffs for Mobile Embedded Systems
Energy/QoS provisioning is a challenging task for video applications in power-constrained mobile embedded systems. Many error-resilient video encodings allow us to exploit errors and generate a range of acceptable tradeoff spaces by controlling the amount of errors in the system. This expanded tradeoff space allows system designers to comparatively evaluate different operating points with varyi...
متن کاملQuality of Service in Networks and Distributed Systems
Distributed multimedia systems are becoming more and more important in many situations of our daily life, for instance in office applications (video conferencing), learning environments (tele-teaching and tele-learning, virtual universities), or entertainment (online games, video-on-demand). Usually, some of the media types used in such an application have specific requirements on their transmi...
